I was so sorry to hear about Fred today. Had the opportunity to coach Kevin, one of the most intuitive defensive players I ever coached, and got to see how proud Fred was of him. He will be missed.

Dear LaChapelle family, Fred and I created a Cross Disciplinary program of English and history that we wrote as one of the first multidisciplinary courses at Sharon High School. We spent several summers creating the program and had so many wonderful laughs and stories to share. One of our finest moments was when we took our students to present a story project they had written to the senior residence in Norwood where his father spent his last years. He was a wonderful man; a model for students who needed that extra person in their lives. Rest In Peace, dear friend.

Chief was my history teacher and home room teacher in 1989. He had an amazing way of keeping the class engaged with his gift of communication. He knew every kid, had a nickname for all of us. He was there if you needed to talk and always would make you laugh. He felt more like one of the guys than the teacher, but make no mistake you knew he was in charge. When I think back to my high school years there was some excellent teachers that really cared and made a difference, but none stood as Tall as the chief. He was heads above in every way. A truly giving, kind, thoughtful man. My heart goes out to his family.

It was my priviledge to know and teach with Fred at Sharon for 26 years. He was definitely admired and respected by students as well as fellow teachers. I am crushed by his passing but he is definitely in a better place. I thought of him often. I cannot attend his service due to medical reasons. MAY HE REST IN PEACE

I was sad to learn of "Chief's" passing. I had him as a teacher and a Coach. He had a nickname for everyone. I remember his 3 boys as they would come to practice with him. It made me smile when I read their nicknames. He always made me feel like I was the most important person in the world. Sharon High was a better place because of Chief. Peace to the family. With fond affection. Dutt or Rooster as he called when I played on JV Baseball team.

Chief was one of the best - always with a smile on his face. Reading all the messages on a Sharon page you can see the impact he left on everyone. May his memorable a blessing to all

Chief was such an amazing person and an incredible teacher. I was lucky enough to have him twice as a teacher in high school and after that I would run into him at Shaws in my twenties all the time! He was always so positive and funny. He will be missed so much. Lilah (aka Clogz!)

I’m going to miss coach immensely. My time in his class fanned my passion for history and my time with him on the baseball diamond oversaw a period where the game was my favorite. His humor and kindness are something I will remember forever; as well as his booming voice. Rest on Chief and God bless!

Our condolences to the LaChapelle family as they grieve the loss of Fred or Chief as many called him. I taught at Sharon High for ten years with Fred, so I knew what an amazing teacher, mentor, colleague, coach, & friend Fred was to so many. He was the best of the best! Loved by all! It saddens me and my family to learn of his passing & his struggles with cancer. My family lived not far from the LaChapelles in Canton. Our oldest daughter, Karen Woods went to school & played softball with Fred’s youngest daughter Jackie. My husband Rick Woods remembers helping Fred coach a Canton Softball Travel Team. Fred & his memory will remain in our hearts forever! Rest in peace Fred - you touched us and thousands of others. You made such a positive impact on all who were privileged to know you. Sending hugs from the Coffey-Woods Family to all the LaChapelle Family members!

Fred was a kind, highly intelligent and gifted person. I knew him in my years teaching at Sharon High School from 1969-1980. Fred taught there for 35 years from 1968-2003. He was an immensely popular teacher both for his knowledge and his deep caring for all of his students no matter what the level. Most of all I remember him as a caring and great friend who always had a smile for everyone. He was deeply concerned for his students and they in turn deeply respected him.
