Ed (Eddie) Welch was one of the people I remember best from my brief (2-year) stint working at Fay, Spofford & Thorndike in the early 1970s. In those days, the company was at 10 Beacon St. in Boston. Ed was a surveyor at the time, if memory serves. What I remember about him was his smile and good humor. It always seemed as if he was in a good mood. Often I would find myself seated in a group of FS&T employees traveling together on the commuter rail. I lived in Mansfield (along with my then-supervisor, Rodney Plourde), but Eddie got off at Sharon, along with our department head, Bertram Berger. It was almost always a jolly group, especially on Friday nights. One other small detail I remember -- Ed was the first person I knew who purchased a Hewlett-Packard calculator. They had just come out and cost a whopping $395! But Ed felt it would increase his efficiency, so he got one. Everyone else in the office was amazed and a bit jealous. (This was back in the Stone Age of computing and calculating, you must understand.) I was glad, and not surprised, to read that Ed had eventually become a director at FS&T. I can imagine he would have been a good manager and would have earned a spot on the board. Sadly, I lost touch with Ed after I left FS&T, so it has been 40 years since I saw him, but I have never forgotten his cheerful presence, around the office and on the train. My sincere condolences to the family.
