Obituary

Our dear mother, Margaret (Midge) Hammersley, passed away peacefully at her home, on April 3, 2024. Midge was the loving mother of David Hammersley, Donna Smith and Paul Hammersley. She raised her children with love and devotion in Malden, MA together with her late husband, Arnold Hammersley.

Midge worked for many years for the IRS. She always spoke fondly of the wonderful friendships she made through her job. Midge was also a devoted fur mama and must be so happy to now be reunited with her beloved border collie, Bernie and her larger than life tabby cat, Charlie. Midge was a great seamstress and when her children were younger, she often made their clothing by hand. These days, she was no longer making clothes, but she could still knit you a beautiful blanket practically before you even finished picking out the color. Midge also loved keeping busy with challenging jigsaw puzzles. Her favorites were lighthouse scenes. And a holiday was never complete without Midge's homemade cheesecake.
Midge loved serving the Malden community and had proudly worked going door to door as a census taker and also volunteered on many political campaigns. These days you could still find her out, front and center, as one of Malden Overcoming Addiction's biggest cheerleaders. As a parent who watched her children work hard to overcome some challenges, nothing has made her prouder than seeing the successful adults they have become. Nothing that is, except her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Watching them grow and being part of their lives has brought her so much joy. To Midge, the only thing better than being called Ma, was being called Nanu. It is the family's hope that the unconditional love and support Midge always showed others, will somehow carry on through them all.

Margaret (Little) Hammersley was born on December 26, 1931 to the late Walter and Eliza Little in Cohasset, MA. Margaret had three brothers. George Little, and the late Walter Jr. and Garfield. She married the love of her life, the late Arnold Hammersley, in 1957. Margaret leaves behind her children, David Hammersley and his partner Nancy Murphy, Donna Smith, and Paul Hammersley and his wife Lisa. Margaret also leaves her grandchildren, Alison Hammersley and her husband Matt Gossen, Derek Hammersley, Kenneth Smith, Danny Smith, Kerri Hammersley and Bella Hammersley and great-grandchildren Kadence Smith and Haley Ocasio.
Following Midge's wishes, the wake will be private.

Friends and family are invited to attend a graveside service at Woodlawn Cemetery, 302 Elm St., Everett on Thursday, April 11, 2024 at 11am. Those wishing to attend should meet at the Woodlawn Cemetery entrance gate on Elm Street at 11am to take part in the procession.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Midge can make a donation to Malden Overcoming Addiction.
