Obituary

Carolyn G. (Grande) Harder, aged 80, of Winchester, passed away unexpectedly in Rancho Mirage, California, on March 22, 2024. A cherished mother, daughter, sister, and friend, she was the loving mother of Lauren Harder of Cambridge and Ashley Harder of Phoenix, AZ. Born in Boston, MA, Carolyn was the daughter of the late Gaetano and Mildred (Maresco) Grande, sister of the late Guy Grande of Medford, and was raised in Winthrop, MA. She is also survived by her brother, Jim Mader of Florida.

A proud alumna of Dana Hall High School and Elmira College, where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Art History, Carolyn devoted 14 years to teaching in the Marblehead elementary schools and had a long tenure as a docent of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Her commitment to art, music, and education was eclipsed only by her dedication to her family, and friends and her generous spirit.

Carolyn’s life was a testament to love, beauty and grace. Her home was a haven of hospitality, renowned for her exquisite dinner parties and homemade goodies. She embodied elegance and approached the world with a sense of class, whether through her choice of fashion, her treasured jewelry, or her meticulous and thoughtful handwritten notes. Her natural beauty was accentuated by a touch of glamour that was uniquely hers.

Embracing her Italian-American heritage, Carolyn’s love for Italy was rooted deeply in her being. She celebrated her 80th birthday with a daring journey to Assisi and the Umbrian hills, driving through the countryside and continuing her lifelong passion for exploration. Her independent spirit was further exemplified in her quest to learn Italian in her fifties, leading to cherished summers immersed in the language and culture of Italy.

An enthusiastic traveler, Carolyn's particular fondness for cruises highlighted her appreciation for sophisticated world travel. When at home, her patronage of the arts was unwavering, with a special affinity for music. She was a frequent patron of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Pops, and other notable music institutions. She held a deep affection for the swing music of the '50s, especially the works of Frank Sinatra.

Her unwavering support and love for her children were evident in her tireless efforts to participate in their lives, regardless of distance. From assisting with household moves to hosting celebrations, Carolyn's presence was a constant source of comfort and joy. Her grandchildren, Emma and Zoe, were a source of immense pride, and she took great delight in their activities and accomplishments.

Carolyn’s friendships spanned from kindergarten through every subsequent phase of her life. They were lifeblood and integral to her resilience, strength, and joy in life. She had an extraordinary ability to make everyone feel remembered and valued.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in Carolyn’s honor at St. Eulalia’s Church, 50 Ridge St., Winchester, on Thursday, April 11, 2024, at 1:00 PM. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. Following the Mass, Carolyn will be laid to rest at Oak Grove Cemetery in Medford.
