Joseph P. Furey, 77

Dateline: Brockton, MA

Joseph P. Furey, age 77, recently of Norton, a former longtime resident of Brockton, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, March 21, 2024 at CareOne of Sharon. He was the beloved husband of Elizabeth A. (Berry) Furey, with whom he recently celebrated fifty-five years of marriage.

Born in Somerville, MA on April 2, 1946, he was a loving son of the late Patrick and Delia (Callanan) Furey.

Joe grew up in Dorchester and was a 1965 graduate of Gate of Heaven High School in South Boston. For five years, he proudly served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps Reserves and was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant.

Prior to retiring, Mr. Furey was a Letter Carrier for the United States Postal Service in North Easton for twenty-two years. He had previously been employed in ramp service for twenty-five years at Eastern Airlines at Logan Airport.

A former fifty-one year resident of Brockton, Joseph was a longtime parishioner of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Brockton and for six years, volunteered his time and assistance at the Brockton VA Medical Center.

Joe’s greatest gift in life was his adoring family. He especially loved being surrounded by his grandchildren and attending their sporting events. Joe kept in shape by exercising daily and bicycling. He was also an avid reader and had a knack for landscaping.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his devoted daughters: Erin M. Shea and her husband John of Norton and Kristen E. Sera and her husband Michael of Mansfield. He was the cherished grandfather of Ryan Shea, Kate Shea, Tom Sera and Kevin Sera. He was the dear brother of the late John Furey. He was the much-loved brother-in-law of Brian Berry and his wife Elizabeth of Raynham, Elaine Ellis and her husband Peter of Whitman, Margaret Kelly and her husband John of Norton and is also survived by his loving nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend visiting hours on Monday, April 1st from 4:00-7:00 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main Street, Mansfield.

His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 2nd at 10:30 A.M. in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 433 West Street Brockton. Burial, along with military honors, will follow at Pine Hill Cemetery, West Bridgewater.
