Brother Louis Marek, SA (Edward F. Marek), age 83, of Brockton died on Sunday, March 10, 2024 at St. Joseph Manor. Born in Central Falls, RI and raised in Cumberland, RI, Brother Louis was the son of the late Peter and Sophie (Baron) Marek. He was educated in Rhode Island beginning at St. Patrick’s School in Valley Falls. He graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in Central Falls in 1958 and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Religious Studies from Providence College in 1973. He continued his education by obtaining a Master’s degree in Systematic Theology from Boston College in 1978.
Brother Louis entered the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement on July 7, 1958 as a postulant. He professed first vows on July 25, 1959 and final vows on July 26, 1961. Brother Louis was a member of the Atonement Community for over 60 years, serving in many locations and in many different capacities. He had been at the Chapel of Our Savior in Brockton since 1993.
Brother Louis was proud of his Polish heritage and enjoyed spending time with his family. He will always be remembered for his extreme thoughtfulness and generosity. He never missed a birthday or a greeting card for all special occasions. Brother Louis had a passion for the music of the 1950’s, especially the Everly Brothers. He enjoyed watching Lawrence Welk reruns and solving crossword puzzles. One of his favorite foods was the American hot dog!
Brother Louis was the brother of Stasia Barac of South Attleboro, MA; Helen Matisewski of Cumberland, RI and the late Joseph Marek, Julia Bucko, Frederick Marek and Louis Marek. He was an amazing, thoughtful uncle to many nieces and nephews and a beloved Godfather.
Visitation will be held on Monday, March 18, 2024 at the Chapel of Our Savior, 475 Westgate Drive, Brockton from 11am-2pm, followed by a Funeral Mass at 2pm. Burial will be held in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cumberland, RI on Tuesday at 11am.
