Obituary

Robert A. Cook (Bob), a longtime resident of Lowell, MA, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, February 27, 2024. He was the husband of the late Della (Vourloumis) Cook with whom he celebrated over 50 years of marriage.

Born in Lowell on March 4, 1939, he was the son of the late John J. and Mary Josephine (Teague) Cook. Bob, nicknamed “Cookie”, grew up in the Centerville section of Lowell and served as an altar boy at St. Michael’s Church. He graduated from St. Michael Parochial School and went on to study as an electrician at Lowell Trade High School. He excelled on the basketball court, being one of the highest scoring Point Guards in Lowell and graduated as Class President.

After graduating high school, Bob served his country in the U.S. Army Reserves then began his career working for Honeywell as an electronics engineer for over 25 years. Bob’s remarkable work ethic was demonstrated throughout his entire life and it was typical for him to work multiple jobs at any one time. After retiring from Honeywell, he worked as a custodian for 10 years for the Lowell School Department and was beloved by the students until he finally retired.

Bob followed all New England sports teams, especially the Red Sox and Patriots in addition to having a passion for playing golf. He also shared his talent for singing throughout high school and beyond and often sang renditions of Frank Sinatra and brought down the house at his daughter Roberta’s wedding when he sang “New York, New York”.

In addition to working hard his whole life and taking care of his family, Bob will be remembered for having an incredibly dry sense of humor. He could make anyone laugh with his quick wit and never ran out of one liners. He was also extremely proud of his Irish heritage.

Above all, Bob was a remarkably loving, generous, and devoted husband and family man. He proudly fulfilled his role as “Dad” and ”Papa” and helped raise many people in his family. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him. Thank you daddy for being the best father in the world.
Robert Cook is survived by four children, three daughters and one son: Julie Hill of Dracut, Steven Gendreau of Lowell, Lisa (Belle) Gendreau of Lowell and Roberta (Cook) Fillmore and husband Keith Fillmore of Tewksbury.

He was also predeceased by four loving children and his three siblings: Vanessa (Hill) Gonzalez, Marie Hill, Peter Hill, Raymond Gendreau, Jonathan Cook, Marjorie A. (Cook)(Cullen) Cutter, and George Cook.

Bob also leaves behind a sister-in-law, numerous nieces and nephews, 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. Bob particularly enjoyed watching his youngest 3 grandchildren grow, Alexandra and William Fillmore and Carrie Nagle.

A private family service will be held at McDonough Funeral, 14 Highland Street., Lowell, MA on Tuesday, March 5th at 10:00 am with burial in the Westlawn Cemetery.
