Obituary

Julian Garmil, was a visionary in the field of computer science and a distinguished alumnus of MIT, where he earned his degree in electrical engineering, passed away recently. His illustrious career began with his significant contribution to the Apollo space project, a testament to his brilliance and dedication to advancing technology beyond the confines of our world.

Following his work on the Apollo project, Julian joined Draper Labs, where he continued to push the boundaries of engineering and technology. His quest for innovation led to Data General, where he worked in both the United States and the United Kingdom, serving clients in England and especially Ireland, solidifying his reputation as a leading figure in the tech industry.
While at Draper lab, along with several of his friends from MIT, Julian became interested in road rally racing and participated in many of these events and also served as a manager, planning many of the race routes throughout the greater Boston area.
After returning from the United Kingdom, Julian fulfilled a life-long dream. He qualified to obtain his pilot’s license and purchased a small single engine airplane, flying out of a small airport north of Boston every weekend he had a chance to.
Julian's pioneering spirit was most evident in his work at Symbolics, where he was at the forefront of artificial intelligence development. His contributions during this era were foundational to the field and continue to influence the trajectory of AI research and development.

In pursuit of his passion for technology and entrepreneurship, Julian founded his own computer software development and consulting firm in Newton, MA. Through his company, he not only demonstrated his exceptional skill and creativity development but also mentored the next generation of engineers and computer scientists, leaving a legacy of innovation and inspiration.

Julian's impact on the field of computer science, his contributions to space exploration, and his relentless pursuit of knowledge and innovation have left an indelible mark on the world. He will be remembered not just for his technical achievements but also for his leadership, vision, and the profound influence he had on those who had the privilege to work alongside him.

As we mourn the loss of Julian Garmil, we also celebrate his remarkable life and the countless contributions he made to technology and science. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of engineers, scientists, and innovators. Julian is survived by his loving family, colleagues, and a world that is better for his work and passion.
Although Julian experienced many injuries and illnesses later in his life, his greatest joy was reconnecting with his son, Gregory. He is survived by his son, his nephews Wayne, Richard, and Ross Garmil and his cousins Jeff and Gail Kurland, Sybil Cramer, Leonard Heitin, second cousins Felicia La Fauci, Aaron and Joshua La Fauci, Ellen Mullin, and Sam Heitin.
