Obituary

Barbara M. (Sarty) Bacon, age 96, of Reading, formerly a longtime resident of Winchester, passed away on February 15, 2024. She was the beloved wife of Lawrence P. Bacon for 55 years until his death in 2005.

Born, raised and educated in Medford, Barbara was the daughter of the late George and Elizabeth (March) Sarty. She was a graduate of Medford High School and received her secretarial training at the Catherine Gibbs School. For a time she worked as a secretary, until she had children. For many years she was a homemaker and dedicated her life to her family, only returning to the banking industry at Winchester Trust Co years later when the kids were older, and by that time the bank had merged many times before becoming Bank of America.

Barbara was one of the founding members of the Mishawum Choral Society in 1964, where she enjoyed singing and made many lifelong friends. She was also an active member of the Montvale Congregational Church. In her spare time, aside from singing, she enjoyed bowling. She also volunteered at Winchester Hospital for many years and was very involved in The International Order of Rainbow for Girls with her daughters.

Barbara was the loving mother of Roberta M. Pannos and her husband Stephen Riley of Reading, Kimberly Read and her husband Mark of Vista, CA and the late Patricia Larsen and her surviving husband Larry Larsen. She was also the devoted grandmother of Kristen Copell and her husband Layne, Alexander Pannos and his wife Darrielle, all of Lynn, Marie Berrios and her husband Rolando of Orlando, FL, Laura Larsen and her significant other Andrew Meservey of Woburn and Jessica Lead and her partner Jace of Oceanside, CA; the great-grandmother of Charlotte and Genevieve Copell and Thalia Pannos. She is further survived by a sister-in-law Doris Sarty of Brewster, MA and many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the Costello Funeral Home, 177 Washington St., Winchester, on Friday, March 1 at 11AM. Visiting Hours will be held one hour prior to the Service from 10-11AM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Burial will follow in Wildwood Cemetery Winchester.
