Obituary

William Melton Young, 85, of Fitzgerald, Georgia, died Friday, February 9, 2024, at The Magnolia Place in Ocilla, Georgia.

Funeral services will be held 2 PM, Sunday, February 11, 2024, at New Bethel Holiness Baptist Church in Ben Hill County, Georgia, with the Rev. Edsel Young, the Rev. Logan Walker, and the Rev. Aaron Fuller officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with the Rev. Allen Hulett officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services in the sanctuary on Sunday.

Mr. Young was born September 8, 1938, in Ben Hill County, Georgia, to the late Roger & Gortell McCook Young. After graduating high school, Mr. Young served his country honorably in the United States Army. He retired as a machinist for Rainbow Manufacturing for over 40 years. He enjoyed working in his yards and was known for keeping them and his vehicles in immaculate condition. He was awarded Beauty Spot of the Month by the Garden Club. He was a longtime member and Deacon for over 40 years at New Bethel Holiness Baptist Church. A devoted Christian, Mr. Young was very faithful to his church and was present every time the doors were opened. He also served as church secretary and oversaw the cemetery.

He is survived by his daughter, Kim & Donnie Youghn of Ocilla; grandchildren, Cody & Anna Youghn, Kaley Youghn & Ed Holley, and Bryan Youghn; great-grandson, Walker Youghn; brothers: James & Victoria Young of Fitzgerald and Jimmy & Polly Ann Young of Coffee County; sisters: Lois Smith of Wray and Elene & C.A. Hulett of Fitzgerald; brother-in-law, Charles McLean of Pridgen; sister-in-law, Gail Young of Fitzgerald; as well as many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife of 53 years, Doris Shrouder Young; a son, Melton Eddie Young; two brothers: an infant brother and David Young; sisters: Grace McLean and Clara Mae & Jerry Greene; and a brother-in-law, Wilbert Smith.

The family wishes to gratefully acknowledge Sharon Griffin and all of the staff at The Magnolia Place for the loving and compassionate care they gave to Mr. Young over the last few months.
