Mr. James M. Black was born December 18, 1922 in Jefferson County, Georgia- the 3rd child of nine children to W.M. Lawson and Addie Lee McCoy Black. James was a native of Jefferson County and in later years made Augusta his home. He served a year in the (CCC) Civilian Conservation Corps in Tennille, Georgia. James owned and operated Black's Automotive Repair Shop for more than 20 years, before retiring at the age of 62. He remained active after retirement and started the Interlocking Square Dance Club. James was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his five brothers.
His survivors include one brother, Billy R. Black of Augusta; two sisters, Frances McKnight of Murfreesboro, Tennessee and Betty Kent of Orem, Utah; two sons, Don L. Black of Quitman, Texas and John F. Black of Mayfield, Utah; three daughters, Margaret Gatliff of Edgehill, Georgia, Marcia Gray of Augusta, and Lora Moore of Starr, South Carolina. Mr. Black was blessed with twenty-one grandchildren; forty-three great grandchildren; and nineteen great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 P.M. Friday at Platt's Funeral Home Crawford Avenue.
A graveside service will take place at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, January 19, 2019 in Westover Memorial Park. Elder Edward Burgess will officiate.
