Walter S. Jones, Jr, 72, of New Bedford died January 4, 2019 peacefully at home after a long courageous battle with cancer.
He was the husband of Arlene M. (Estrella) Jones.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Edith (Sullivan) Fox and Walter S. Jones, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.
Mr. Jones was formerly employed as Director of Social Services and Resident Relations for the New Bedford Housing Authority for 37 years until his retirement.
Walter was a 1971 graduate of Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas. He enjoyed sports, music, dancing and traveling. He was an avid fan of the New York Knicks and Detroit Lions. He served on several community boards, including West End Day Nursery of New Bedford and the Boys and Girls Club of New Bedford, and received awards for his service. His legacy of kindness, caring, thoughtfulness and humor will live on with anyone he has ever encountered. Walter loved spending time with family and close friends. He will be greatly missed.

Survivors include his wife; 2 sons, Walter S. Jones, III and Ryan T. Jones, both of New Bedford; 2 step-sons, Brian T. Granfield and his companion Tina Furtado and Matthew D. Granfield and his companion Sonya Mendonca, all of New Bedford; a sister, Bonnie McConnell of Florida; 3 grandchildren, Djibraa Pina-Jones, Le'Kenzi A. Jones and A'yan M. Jones; his former wife, Rebecca (Greene) Jones of New Bedford; a niece, Kate McConnell of Florida; and a nephew, Peter McConnell of New Bedford.
