Obituary

Longtime Provincetown resident Joyce A. [Bjornsen] Bailey died January 3rd, just 13 days shy of her 91st birthday. She was the wife of the late Charles J. Bailey.

Joyce was born and educated in Chicago. She got her start in the early television industry in Chicago, and was a regular on the Sherry Lewis Show. She moved east to NYC where she raised her daughters; then moved to Boston, eventually locating in Provincetown, where she worked as a seamstress. She often said that ‘there wasn’t a pair of pants in town that she hadn’t hemmed’.

She was an avid gardener, and baker, but one of her greatest joys was traveling the world. She went to China the first year it was open to Americans. She traveled to Russia, then Siberia to see reindeer. Norway, where her people originated, Sweden and Finland were also on her list. She saw the tortoises and blue footed boobies in the Galapagos, and visited Machu Picchu. She went to Patagonia and the Arctic to see the caving of the glaciers (she was very much an environmentalist), traveled through most of Europe and the Balkans. She also saw a good bit of the United States. She made many good friends during her travels; a favorite traveling companion was Cece Schwartzman.

She also was one of the first members of the Provincetown Recycling Committee, worked with others to save Clapp’s Pond and helped establish the Art Associations Secret Garden Tour.

Joyce was beloved by all who knew her. Her smile was contagious and she was always joyful in the face of many hardships.

Daughters Laura Knight Kirkpatrick and Sarah Anne Bailey, son-in-law’s David Michael Knight, Michael Sean Kirkpatrick and daughter-in-law Paula Jane Schuppert as well as the many friends she made worldwide survive her. She was predeceased by grandson Matthew Thomas Knight.

A Memorial Gathering will be at a time and place to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the VNA of Cape Cod - Hospice, 434 Route 134, South Dennis, MA 02660.
