Ronald D. Canning, Sr., 85

Dateline: Norton, MA

Ronald D. Canning, Sr., age 85, of Norton, passed away surrounded by his adoring family on Sunday, December 16, 2018 at the Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton. He was the beloved husband of the late Mary F. (Conroy) Canning, to whom he was wed for sixty-two years at the time of her death on November 17, 2014.

Born in Boston, MA on May 9, 1933, he was a loving son of the late Walter and Florence (Currie) Canning.

Ron grew up in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood of Boston and was educated at Our lady of Lourdes Schools. He had made his home in Norton for the past twenty-nine years and was a former resident of Roslindale and Jamaica Plain.

Mr. Canning was the retired founder and president of New England Sign Services, a company he successfully operated in Mansfield and Norton for sixty years and which is still presently family owned.

Ron was a communicant of Saint Mary’s Church in Norton and a former parishioner of Sacred Heart Church in Roslindale. His family was the focal point of his life and he enjoyed reading, bicycling, bird watching and always maintained a healthy lifestyle.

He is survived by his devoted children: Ronald D. Canning, Jr. of Norton, Catherine Madani and her husband Hossein of Watertown, Paul Canning and his wife Christine of North Attleboro, Maribeth Moriarty and her husband Patrick of Norton, John Canning and his wife Tricia of Newton, and the late Patricia “Patty” Canning. He was the cherished grandfather of April Porter and her husband Kyle, Daniel Madani, Aidan Canning, Amanda Moriarty, Meaghan Moriarty, Emma Canning and Sadie Canning, and great grandfather of Jackson Porter. He was the dear brother of Robert Canning and his wife Joyce of California and the late Walter Canning, Kenneth Canning and Norman Canning, who is survived by his wife Betty of New Hampshire. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

His Funeral Mass, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be celebrated on Friday December 21st at 10:00 A.M. in St. Mary’s Church, 1 Power St., Norton. Burial will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in West Roxbury.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, December 20th from 5:00-8:00 P.M. at the Norton Memorial Funeral Home, 19 Clapp St. (Off Route 140, Taunton Avenue) Norton.
