Obituary

Samuel J. Sawyer, 54, of Mystic, CT died on December 11, 2018. He is survived by his beloved wife of 25 years, Maryann (Misiorek), and cherished daughter, Katharine. He was predeceased by his mother, Maureen (Smith) Sawyer; father Jeffrey Sawyer; and step-mother, Marilyn (Lane) Sawyer.

Sam was born in Phillipsburg, New Jersey on November 24, 1964. The family moved to Easton, Pennsylvania until the death of Sam’s mother when he was 9 years old. The loss prompted Sam’s father to relocate the family to North Stonington, Connecticut to be near other family members.

Sam graduated from North Stonington High School in 1982. He forged many friendships in southeastern Connecticut. Sam married the love of his life, Maryann, in 1993. They welcomed their daughter, Katharine (Kady), in 1998. Sam adored Kady and was very proud of her. He delighted in her independence and spirit. Sam was very social, and he and Maryann graciously hosted many gatherings over the years. These gatherings brought together many sides of the community. Sam also enjoyed being outdoors, especially hiking with his dog, cycling, and spending time at the beach.

Sam worked in the wholesale seafood industry for decades, beginning at Capt. Sawyer’s Seafood, his father’s business in North Stonington. Sam and his father spent many years supplying clients with seafood along the long-distance route from Connecticut to Easton, PA, where Sam developed his knowledge of the wholesale seafood industry and the skill of customer service. Sam worked at Grossman’s Seafood in West Mystic for more than 20 years where he developed and grew the wholesale side of the business. He later worked at Seawell Seafood in Stonington for about 10 years, where he also developed a large wholesale business base. Sam was a hard and dedicated worker.

Sam battled and overcame Stage 4 cancer just a few years ago, which makes this sudden loss sting more.

Friends are invited to visit with the family and remember Sam at the Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street in Mystic on Wednesday, December 19, 2018 from 6-8 p.m.
