Obituary

Colonel Charles T. Westcott, Jr, USMC (ret) died in his home at 8 West Vine Street in Provincetown on December 2, 2018. He was 95 years old.

Charles was the son of Lieutenant Colonel Charles T. Westcott, USMC and Caroline Prevost Westcott, both of whom served in France during World War I. He was orphaned at three years old and raised by his maternal grandmother Caroline Stevens Prevost. She purchased the property on West Vine Street in Provincetown in 1927 and he spent his very happy childhood sailing Provincetown Harbor, and exploring Telegraph Hill and the Province Lands beyond. He attended the West End School and Provincetown High School through ninth grade. He then shipped out for Admiral Farragut Academy where he graduated in 1942. After a brief time in the naval reserve, Charles attended the U.S. Naval Academy graduating in 1945 with the accelerated class of 1946.

During his 30 years on active duty, Colonel Westcott led Marines in Japan and China in 1945; in Korea in 1954; and Vietnam in 1965 and again in 1970. He also served in a variety of assignments at Marine bases across the United States and in staff positions in Washington DC. He retired from the Marine Corps in 1975 and he and his beloved wife Carol returned to Provincetown.

Charlie’s wife, the artist Carol Whorf Westcott, his six children, Provincetown and St Mary of the Harbor Episcopal Church were his passion. After returning to Provincetown he served in town government and worked for the Center for Coastal Studies. At the Church of St. Mary of the Harbor, he served on the vestry and organized the annual service in memory of the sinking of the submarine USS S-4. His summers were spent surrounded by visiting children and sailing with grandchildren who all came to share his love for Provincetown.

Colonel Westcott was preceded in death by his wife Carol in 2008 and their son, Captain Charles T. Westcott, USMC (ret) in 1999. He is survived by daughters Mary Fry (Scott) and Amy Mason (Douglas) and sons Mark (Carol), Christopher (Patricia), and Matthew (Ginger), as well as 14 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Family and friends are invited to a Funeral Service to be held at 11:00 am Saturday, December 15th at St Mary of the Harbor Episcopal Church, 517 Commercial St, Provincetown. Burial, with military honors will follow.
