WORCESTER: Richard N. “Dick” Sargent, 79, a retired Worcester Police Officer, died unexpectedly shortly after midnight on Friday, November 30, 2018 at UMass Memorial Medical Center - University Campus, after becoming ill at home.
He leaves his wife of 60 years, Doris M. (Barry) Sargent; two sons, Worcester Police Chief Steven M. Sargent and his wife Mary, Richard M. Sargent and his wife Rachyl, all of Worcester; four brothers Robert Valentine and his wife Renee of Florida, Thomas Valentine and his wife Sharon of West Boylston, Reed Sargent and his wife Michele of Grafton, Donald Wood and his wife Elle of Grafton; a sister Pamela Hill of Oregon; four grandchildren, Robert J. Sargent and his wife Rachael, Brendan M. Sargent, Worcester Police Officer Steven T. Sargent, Brianna M. Sargent; and a great grandson, Landon K. Sargent all of Worcester; several nieces, nephews, cousins and many close friends in the Worcester Police Department and at Brooks Pub on Lincoln Street.
Two brothers, Eugene and Douglas Wood; and two sisters, Catherine Clark and Judy Gardula, all predeceased him. He was born and raised in Worcester, son of the late Reed W. and Doris M. (Flagg) Sargent and attended Worcester Boys Trade High School and earned an Associate’s degree from Quinsigamond Community College. He served in the United States Navy and was also a member of the Army Reserves for 10 years.
Dick was a Worcester Police Officer for 35 years retiring in 2003 at the rank of Lieutenant. He previously worked as a machinist at Hobbs Manufacturing in Worcester for 10 years. He was a long-time member of St. Bernard’s Church, now known as Our Lady of Providence Parish; a former member of the Worcester Patrol Officers Union and the Worcester Police Officials Union; a current member of the Massachusetts Police Association (MPA); a member of the Knights of Columbus Alhambra Council, and a charter member of Dinny’s/Brooks Pub. He loved being a Worcester Police Officer and most enjoyed golf and spending time with his family. He was an avid Patriots and Red Sox Fan and will be remembered for being a very reliable consummate gentleman.
CALLING HOURS will be from 6 to 9 P.M. on TUESDAY, DEC. 4, in KELLY FUNERAL HOME, 154 Lincoln Street. A MASS of CHRISTIAN BURIAL will be held at 10 A.M. on WEDNESDAY, DEC. 5, in ST. BERNARD’S CHURCH of OUR LADY OF PROVIDENCE PARISH, 236 Lincoln Street. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery.
