WESTPORT- Helder M. Fernandes, age 66, passed away on October 15, 2018 after a battle with bile duct cancer surrounded by his loving family. Born in Mosteiros, São Miguel, Açores, he was the son of Irondina Ferreira, and the late Manuel Fernandes, and husband of Maria “Zelia” (DaSilva) Fernandes. He was a construction foreman for over 30 years with various construction companies and a union member and steward for Local 610. Helder started playing music at age 9 for Banda Harmonia Mosteirense then moved on to Banda Militar until he immigrated to the U.S. in 1974. He continued his love for music playing for Banda Nossa Senhora da Luz, Banda Nossa Senhora do Anjos, and lastly, Banda Santo Antonio where he was a musician for many years and served as president for 12 years. He was an avid gardener and farmer, who loved life, his family and friends, and had a smile that could brighten up a room.
Helder’s family would like to send a thank you to the physicians, nurses, and staff of Charlton Memorial Hospital and a special thank you to Dr. Daniel Sousa who was always there when they needed him most and whose guidance and support brought them comfort in Helder’s final hours.
In addition to his wife and mother Helder is survived by his daughters; Sandy Choquette (husband Kraig) and Amanda Melo (husband Eric), grandchildren; Andrew Choquette, Hannah Choquette, and Nicholas Helder Melo, siblings; Natalia Silva, Conceicão Branco, João Domingos Fernandes and many nieces and nephews.
His funeral will take place from the Manuel Rogers & Sons Funeral Home 1521 N. Main St. Fall River on Saturday at 7:30 A.M. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial Santo Christo Church at 9 A.M. Interment in Notre Dame Cemetery. Calling hours on Friday from 4-8 P.M. In celebration of his life and to honor his memory in lieu of flowers all donations will be sent to the Cholangiocarcinoma Cancer Foundation.
