Retired Sergeant Boston Police Department.
Of West Roxbury, October 10, 2018. Beloved husband of Jane M. (Vitello) O’Neil. Loving father of Brianne O’Neil Hiddema of South Haven, MI and her husband John Hiddema. and Michael D. O’Neil and his fiancé Laurel Miles of Germantown, TN. Devoted Grandpa of Margot Charley Hiddema. Brother of Robert O’Neil, Steven O’Neil of Newton and the late Kenneth O’Neil. Also survived by several nieces and nephews. Charlie was a Vietnam Veteran serving with the Army 1st Infantry Division Spec/5 and the Recipient of a Bronze Star Medal with a “V” for Valor, Two Bronze Service Stars, a Purple Heart, Presidential Unit Citation and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. After leaving the Military and prior to his service with the Boston Police, he became a Trooper with the Massachusetts State Police for six years. As a Boston Police Officer he attained the rank of Sergeant and spent most of his career working in the BPD Special Operations and Motorcycle Unit. He received his BA in Political Science from UMASS Boston and his Master’s Degree in Criminology from Anna Maria College. Charlie was a proud lifelong resident of Boston, but also enjoyed spending time with his family at his homes in Brewster MA and Delray Beach FL. Visiting hours will be held on Monday October 15th from 4pm – 8pm at the William J. Gormley Funeral Home 2055 Centre St. West Roxbury. A Funeral Service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday morning at 11 o’clock. Relatives and friends respectfully invited. Interment St. Joseph Cemetery.
