Obituary

June Carole (Hemminger) Knox, formerly of Medford, MA, passed away on October 5, 2018 at the age of 95. Born on June 17, 1923 in Lorain, Ohio, June, the youngest of five children, was the daughter of John and Minnie (Koleno) Hemminger. She met and married James B. Knox while they were in the US Navy, stationed at Norfolk Virginia Naval Station. Together they returned to Medford, Massachusetts where they were active in their church, community and the family business of Knox Photo.

Mrs. Knox will be warmly remembered for her courage, her generosity, and her love of country. She held dear life-long friendships across many generations and knew the power and importance of sharing her time and talents with others. Mrs. Knox’s handmade gifts are treasured by many and her knitted sweaters passed down from generation to generation. She was an avid reader who loved to travel as much as she loved to entertain guests in her home. Mrs. Knox opened her heart to all who knew her with her beautiful smile and sweet embrace. She was a two-time survivor of breast cancer and her home was a safe haven for homeless women and children through the Bridge Over Troubled Waters organization. She enjoyed her summers in New Hampshire and was often found knitting at the river or filling her car with neighborhood children for evening rides to get ice cream. Her greatest pride was her family and her service to her country during World War II. Mrs. Knox was a charter member of Women in Military Service Memorial in Washington D.C. and instilled her patriotism in her children, grandchildren and great-grand children.

Mrs. Knox is survived by her son David Knox and his wife Karen Lotta-Knox of Rochester, New York; her daughters Deborah Smith and husband Harry of Albany, New Hampshire, Janice Mulherin and husband Nathan of Rumney, New Hampshire and Carole Eichner and husband Eduard of Centerville, Massachusetts; grandchildren Jennifer and John Christian, Elizabeth and Chris Cappetta, Elton and Jeniffer Lotta, Lou and Patty Lotta, David and Renea Smith, Matthew Smith, Sarah and Boyd Watkins, Sean Mulherin, Kyler Mulherin, Drew Eichner and Emma Eichner, seven great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

June Knox was pre-deceased by her husband James B. Knox, her brothers Howard, William and George Hemminger and sister Wanda Gascoigne.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday, October 12 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at the Beals-Geake-Magliozzi Funeral Home on 29 Governor’s Ave in Medford. Funeral Services will be held at the First Community United Methodist Church, 55 Otis Street, Medford, MA on October 13, at 10:30 am. Burial will follow at the Veteran’s Section in Oak Grove Cemetery in Medford, Massachusetts.
