Margie Gillespie Payne, age 87, of Victoria, VA, passed away Wednesday, September 12, 2018. She was born on July 17, 1931 in Asheville, N.C. and was the daughter of the late Fred and Dorothy Gillespie.
Mrs. Payne was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey Payne; a brother, Bill Gillespie; and lifelong friend, Mabel Price.
She is survived by three sons, Joe Payne and wife, Brenda, James Payne and wife, Marty, and John Payne and wife, Diana; four grandchildren, Bart Payne, Kelly Cadle, Chrystal Starke, and Ashley Morris; two step-granddaughters, Sheree Flynn and Mary Beth Thomas; one step-grandson, Matthew Moss; and eight great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Shirley Treadway of Marshall, N.C.; numerous nieces and nephews; and lifelong friends, Ann Kyle and Tex Price.
Margie loved flowers, going to church, and being with people. She was a proud military mom to her three sons; Joe – Air Force, James – Army, and John – Army. She was an active member of Mount Zion Baptist Church for over 50 years and also attended Faith Baptist Church. She worked as a seamstress at factories in Boydton, South Hill, Chase City, and Victoria. She retired at the age of 79 when she was working at Steps, Inc. in Victoria, VA.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, September 15, 2018 at Mount Zion Baptist Church, 73 Meherrin River Road, Chase City, VA 23924. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial contributions to Mount Zion Baptist Church or Faith Baptist Church.
