Obituary


McCarthy, Robert E. of Dennis, Ma, formerly of Quincy, passed away peacefully on August 14, 2018. He was 88 years old. He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years Jeanne (Scanlan). Bob was born to the late Timothy W. & Katherine (Kearns) McCarthy.
Bob was a proud graduate of Boston College High School and Boston University. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1949 and served in Korea for 18 months prior to his discharge in 1952. When he returned from Korea, he received his bachelor’s degree in education and master’s degree in health and physical education from Boston University. Bob began is teaching career for the Weymouth Public Schools in 1957. Bob was a Physical Education teacher and multi-sport coach during his 34 year career there. He taught at many of the schools in the town, and spent most of those years in the Physical Education department at Bicknell Junior High School.
Loving father of Marie L. McNeilly and her husband David of Norfolk, Ma, Robert E. McCarthy Jr. and his wife Sheila of Norwell, Ma, and Kevin M. McCarthy and his wife Lisa of Windsor, CT. Proud grandfather to Katie McNeilly, Christine and Bobby McCarthy, and Brianna and Allison McCarthy. Brother in-law to the late Robert M. Scanlan and his wife Joanne, the late Richard Scanlan, and the late Clyde and Anne Pushard. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Brother of the late Sister Margaret McCarthy, SC, the late Sister Mary McCarthy, SC, Dorothy Cleary of Manchester, MA, Eileen Trimble of New Carrollton, MD, Catherine Sheehan of Garden Grove, CA, Anne Chouinard of Manchester, MA, Joseph McCarthy and his wife Sheila of Manchester, and the late Alyce Hope.
Visiting hours will be Sunday, August 19 from 2-6 PM in the Pushard Family Funeral Home, 210 Sherman Street, Canton, MA. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 am on Monday, August 20 in St. John the Evangelist Church 700 Washington St., Canton, MA. Interment will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery in West Roxbury.
