Obituary

Ruth Shirley (Pape) Hussey, 86, of Abington, passed away peacefully on August 8, 2018 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Ruth was predeceased by her parents Fred & Hester Pape, husband Joseph, brothers Robert & Charles Pape, sister Elizabeth Carpenter and her beloved daughter Jean Judge. She is survived by her daughter Gail Delaney and husband Steven of East Bridgewater, and sons John Hussey of Abington Ma., Richard Hussey and wife Sue of Milton, Georgia. She’s also survived by her grandchildren Tara Judge-Bergman (husband Lawrence), Christopher Delaney (wife Kim), Lindsay Judge, Kelly, Matthew Delaney (wife Alysson), Meghan, Peter, Joseph Hussey and her great grandchildren; Nathaniel, Laney, Tessa, Emma and Zoey.

Ruth was born and raised on a dairy farm in Cohasset Ma. Where she tended livestock along with her brothers Robert & Charles. She also graduated from Cohasset High School. Ruth and her husband Joseph moved to Abington permanently in 1959. Over her many years residing in Abington, Ruth tirelessly raised money for the town and schools. Some of her multiple achievements include: Raising over $100,000 for student scholarships in Abington, serving many years on the Republican town committee, Night Before the 4th, and Park & Rec. One of Ruth’s proudest honors was earning the title of “Abington’s Best” in 1994. Additionally, she served on countless fundraisers and was known in the community as “The Raffle Queen.” Ruth was recognized numerous times by the town and state for all her notable accomplishments. Ruth also worked as a telephone operator for New England Telephone Company.

Ruth was truly “one of a kind” with an infectious giggle, quick wit and quirky sense of humor. She wasn’t afraid of speaking her mind and had an opinion on just about everything. Also, she loved going to out to eat at the local hotspots and could frequently be seen shopping at South Shore Plaza and Derby Street. Ruth loved spending time with her many friends & family and enjoyed her frequent trips to Foxwoods. A lifelong Red Sox fan, every room in her home had a warm Sox blanket ready to use. She loved a good practical joke and there was no better gift than a bunch of scratch tickets. Over the years, she acquired many collectable figurines that she proudly displayed in her home. Ruth was a lifelong dog lover and considered all her pets as part of her family.

Her funeral services will be held on Monday August 13th at 10:00AM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 at the rotary circle) Whitman. Burial will follow in the Woodside Cemetery, Cohasset, MA. Her visitation will be held Sunday August 12th from 4:00-700PM.
