Obituary

Laurence “Larry” O. Higgins, Sr., 86, of Nashua, NH passed away Monday, August 6, 2018 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Nashua surrounded by his family. He was born in Portland, ME on December 30, 1931, the son of the late Leo L. and Bessie (Oliver) Higgins. Larry graduated from South Portland High School, Maine, class of 1949 and the University of Tulsa in Oklahoma. He was a US Navy veteran having served during the Korean Conflict. Retiring as the Assistant Division Chief for N.E. Region Air Traffic Control facilities, Larry received numerous awards throughout his career with the Federal Aviation Administration. After retirement, he served as a consultant for aerospace industries including Hughes Aircraft, Lockheed Martin, General Electric and was the Contract Director of SRSA at the ARTCC in Nashua.

Larry served as past Vice President of the American Cancer Society. In 1981 he served as coordinator for the Greater Nashua Air Show to benefit the American Cancer Society. He was a communicant of Immaculate Conception Church and St. Patrick’s Church, both of Nashua. He enjoyed listening to country music, and anything to do with Maine which he referred to as “God’s Country”. In addition, Larry loved spending time with his family.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Karen J. (Mayer) Higgins of Nashua, his son, Laurence O. Higgins Jr. of Manchester, NH, four daughters, Kathleen Poirier and her husband Daniel of Nashua, Kelly Bergeon and her husband Charles of Litchfield, NH, Theresa Higgins of Nashua, Kristin Flynn and her husband Sean of Litchfield, 13 grandchildren and one great-grandson with another due shortly. He was predeceased by his daughter Debra Higgins in 1960.

Calling hours were held on Friday August 10, 2018 from 6 to 8pm at the Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 290 Mammoth Rd., Londonderry, NH. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday at 10:00am at Immaculate Conception Church, 216 E. Dunstable Rd., Nashua. Following cremation, burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Beverly, MA.
