Joan E. (Purnell) Walters, a recent resident of Everett and formerly of Malden and Charlestown, entered into eternal life on Saturday, August 4, 2018 at her home in Everett. She was 72 years of age.
Joan was born in Boston on August 11, 1945, a daughter of the late Josephine M. (McManus) Bogue and Robert Bogue. She grew up in Charlestown where she was educated in the Boston Public School System. Joan started working at an early age to help provide for her family. She first worked at Schrafft's Candy Company, but her main occupation in life was as a manager for Avis Car Rental Company, where she worked for over 30 years until her retirement. Joan cherished her family above all else.
Joan is the devoted mother of Diana Clifford and her husband James of Malden, Debra Martinez and her husband Marco of Everett, and Barbara Ainsley of Natick. She is the loving Nana to Catherine Schumann, Barbara Clifford, Deidre Walters, Tyler Martinez, and the loving GiGi to her great-grandchildren Andrew Clifford, John Monaco, Matthew Schumann, and Emma Schumann. She is the beloved sister of Anne Phillips of Malden, George Purnell of Charlestown, Gale Steeves of Stoughton, Michael Purnell of Charlestown, and the late Henry Purnell, William Purnell, and Daniel Purnell. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Joan's Funeral on Wednesday, August 8, 2018 at 8:30 AM from The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown followed by her Funeral Mass in St. Joseph's Church, 790 Salem St, Malden at 10 A.M. Her burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden. Her visiting hours will be on Tuesday, August 7, 2018 from 4 to 7 P.M. in the funeral home.
