Obituary

Lola Mae Hammond Newman, a devout Christian, wife and mother, was born August 1, 1929 and passed away July 27, 2018 at the Mars Hill Retirement Center in Mars Hill, North Carolina.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, August 4, 2018 at Platt’s Crawford Avenue Chapel with Pastor Ben Rueda officiating. Interment to follow at West View Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until service time at the funeral home.

Lola is survived by, and will be greatly missed by her son, Lloyd Newman III, and daughter-in-law, Barbara Newman of Elberton, GA, daughter, Meredith Newman, and son-in-law, David Lester of Mars Hill, NC. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Lloyd Newman IV, Laura Poole, Amanda Poole, Colby Lester, and Jessica Kiltz, and one great grandson, Michael Eli Poole.

Lola was born to John Robert and Lola Estelle Hammond in Forsyth, Georgia but grew up in Thomaston, Georgia. She graduated from Forest Lake Academy in Orlando, FL and received her Teaching Certificate from Southern Adventist University in Collegedale, TN. She moved with her husband to Aiken, SC in 1964 and lived in Aiken until 2015. She taught school in Atlamont, TN and Augusta, GA before moving to Aiken. She worked as a pupil personnel worker for the Aiken Public Schools in Gloverville, SC and helped run the Newman and Associates, Physical Therapy business, with her husband, Lloyd Newman II. They had been married 58 years when he passed away in March of this year. She was a member of the Aiken Seventh Day Adventist Church, the South Carolina Bluebird Association. Lola also loved to write poetry and was a member of the Aiken Poetry Club.
