Lucy Jeanette Perry of Truro died Tuesday July 3, 2018 in her home on the Perry Farm. She was in her 102nd year. Her husband, John S. Perry died in 2001. The Perry Farm, has been a part of Truro since the late 1800s.
Lucy was born in Middleborough, the daughter of the late Charles and Jennie (Wrightington) Athanasiou. Her dad was from Greece and her mom was English. They had a bake shop and made Christmas candy.
Lucy belonged to Eastern Star and met her future husband John at a youth group celebration in Plymouth. About a year after they’d met she came to Truro and soon they married. She and her husband moved into a cottage on the hillside of the farm.
As the farm business went through transformations over the years. Lucy’s chicken pies became famous, as did her flower gardens. Lucy started playing the organ at age 15. Through the years Lucy played the organ at several churches and at the former Cape End Manor, while also teaching Bible classes at her church. Lucy was, several times the “worthy matron” of the Wellfleet Chapter of Eastern Star, made her own dresses that looked store-bought and was the women’s representative at the Farm Bureau meetings. She was the epitome of what farm wives have always been — women dedicated to their husband, family and their community through church.
A party was thrown for Lucy in 1999 upon her retirement from playing organ for the Provincetown Methodist Church after 31 years. She was a Sunday school teacher and president of the Women’s Society. Lucy played at services, weddings, funerals and parties. She was lauded for her baked beans, her floral arrangements and the list of shut-ins she visited.
Lucy leaves her son Richard B. Perry and his wife Cynthia of Provincetown; and daughter-in-law Claire Perry of Truro. Grandchildren Cheryl Costa and her husband David, Debra Locke and her husband Mike, Scott Perry, Samantha Perry, Stephen O. Perry, all of Truro and Kristen Perry of Brewster, survive her. She is also survived by 6 great-grandchildren, one great great grandchild and several nieces and nephews. Her son, Stephen Perry and grandsons, Mark B. Perry and David Perry predeceased her.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Lucy's family on Friday, July 6th, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Gately Funeral Home, 94 Harry Kemp Way, Provincetown. A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, July 7th at the Provincetown United Methodist Church, Shankpainter Road, Provincetown. Burial will follow at the Methodist cemetery in Truro.
