Obituary

James (Jimmy) Timothy Garren passed away on June 21, 2018. He was the loving husband of Mary Jean Salmon for 45 years, father of four, and grandfather to five young boys whom he adored.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, June 25, 2018 at St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church with Rev. Mark Ross serving as celebrant. The family will greet friends following the service in the church narthex.

Jimmy was born on May 1, 1950 in Augusta, GA. He attended Mount St. Joseph Elementary School (St. Mary’s on the Hill Catholic School) and then Aquinas High School. Following graduation he served in the United States Marine Corps. After an Honorable discharge he was an assistant golf pro at Westlake Country Club for seven years. He then began a career with Exxon as the owner of several service stations. The success of his service stations allowed him to move into the profession of his dreams, home design and building. Jimmy became a partner in Sand Hill Construction in 1983 and then went on to found Garren Construction. His first home on Kipling Drive was to be the first of many beautiful homes that he would design and build over the next 30 years in the greater Augusta area. His love of history, architecture, design, and landscaping is apparent in all of his creations and is the reason his talents were widely sought after. He was an avid golfer and student of the game. He loved the competition, and the time he spent with his friends on the course. He was involved in the Augusta Golf Association, Augusta Country Club, and the Historic Preservation Commission of Augusta. Jimmy had a passion for helping others in need and a profound love for his family. He was a caring, generous, humble, and kind man who will be sadly missed by all.

In addition to his wife, Jimmy is survived by his children, Caroline Garren Cook (Chad), Rebecca Garren Moore (Nick), Molly Garren Virgin (Frank), and James Timothy Garren, Jr.; his grandchildren, Jack Player Cook, Thomas Garren Moore, Daniel Wagner Cook, William Livingston Virgin, and Samuel Garren Virgin; his siblings, Katherine Garren Sheehan, William Crane Garren, Jr. (Eve), Joseph Bartley Garren (Louise), John Kearns Garren (Dianne), Paul Bessant Garren, and Mary Louise Garren Nechtman (John); his aunt, Sister Anna Bridget Kearns, C.S.J.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Crane Garren, Sr. and Mary Louise Kearns Garren; and his brother, Peter Jones Garren.

Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Augusta Golf Association.

If so desired memorials may be made to the Hale House, 402 Walker Street, Augusta, GA, 30901.
