Obituary

Elmir Khachatryan was born in Yerevan, Armenia, and passed away on Saturday, June 2, 2018, in Watertown, MA, at the age of 87. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Ida Aslanyan; his two daughters, Susanna Khachatrian and Lusine Hanson; his son-in-law, Russell Hanson; his brother, Mels Martirosyan, and his sister, Alla Khachatryan; nephews Sarkis and Tigran Martirosyan; other nephews and members of his extended family who reside outside of the United States. He was preceded in death by his father, Nazar Khachatryan; his mother, Tamara Malkhasyan; and two brothers, Milich and Armen Khachatryan.

Born in Gyumri and raised in Vanadsor, Elmir Khachatryan studied at Yerevan State Polytechnic Institute where he earned his master’s degree in Electrical Engineering. Upon graduation, he taught at the Engineering College and served in various positions, progressively expanding his responsibilities from a role of Chief Constructor to the positions of Chief Technology Officer/Chief Engineer and Deputy Director at a large factory in Yerevan with many branches and thousands of employees throughout the country. Elmir Khachatryan was highly regarded and loved by his coworkers for his integrity, caring leadership style, sense of humor, and his exceptional kindness.

Through the course of his life, Elmir had supported and helped many colleagues, family members and friends. His home in Armenia was always open for those seeking his advice and guidance as he was viewed by the people as a mentor and a father figure.

His unconditional love and support for his family and friends didn’t have limits. His giving nature and a willingness to extend help to a complete stranger, his unwavering and ever-lasting love and caring (while his own health was much fragile) he provided for his wheelchair-bound wife, were truly remarkable qualities that formed a part of his legacy.

His strong drive to overcome numerous health issues and live independently continued to inspire, for many years, his family and doctors. He always thrived to learn, even in his 80-ies, and taught his children to do the same. His positive outlook on life, even in face of uncertainty and disease, always inspired everyone around him. It was the most powerful skill that he taught his family and friends - by simply being himself.

He was an exceptional person and is dearly missed by his family and friends.

His funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 12, at 11:00 am at Saint James Armenian Church at 465 Mt Auburn St in Watertown, MA. Family and friends are kindly invited to attend. A visitation period will be held in the church sanctuary on Tuesday morning from 10:00-11:00 am, immediately prior to the funeral service. Family and friends are also invited to a memorial luncheon at Armenian American Social Club (76 Bigelow Ave, Watertown, MA 02472; ph.# 617 924 9678).
