Obituary

William James Finnerty, Jr., 87, formerly of Stoughton, passed away Monday, May 28, 2018 at his daughter’s home in Taunton following a period of declining health. He was the devoted husband of the late Frances (Grinkievich) Finnerty for 64 years.

Born September 16, 1930 in Boston, he was the beloved son of the late William J. and Marie A. (Lydon) Finnerty, Sr. He attended Quincy Public Schools and served honorably as a Corporal in the Marine Corps during the Korean War.

William started working for Filene’s Basement in Boston as a young man and retired from the company after over 30 years of employment. He then worked for Towle Manufacturing Co. in Revere before starting a second career as a buyer for Christmas Tree Shops where he commanded the regard and confidence of his business associates, retiring after 25 years.

He was very proud of his Irish heritage and held a lifelong devotion to the Catholic faith. William loved catching up with his large generational family over dinner and took great pride in the accomplishments, both big and small, of his loved ones. He could often be seen walking his treasured dog, Logan around his Sumner Gardens neighborhood, was of a genial disposition, and a good neighbor and friend held in high esteem.

William is survived by his children, Jeane LaCivita and her husband Carl, Joan King and her husband George of Raynham, Jill Finnerty and her husband Tom DePalma, and Jeffrey Finnerty; his grandchildren, Jacob and wife Jessica, Seth and wife Elizabeth, and Alexis LaCivita, Michael and wife Stephanie, Victoria, Veronica and Nicole King, Jonathan and wife Becky and Christopher DePalma, Jessica, Alex and McKenzie Finnerty; his great-grandchildren, William LaCivita and Madelyn Costa; and his siblings, Robert Finnerty of Syracuse, NY, Aline Ellinghausen of Woodstock, GA, and Gerard Finnerty of Hanover; He was predeceased by a sister, Constance DiFruscio.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated for the repose of his soul on Monday at 10:00AM in Saint Andrew the Apostle, 19 Kilmer Ave, Taunton. Funeral from the funeral home at 9AM Interment will follow in the VA National Cemetery, Bourne at 1PM. Calling hours in the O’Keefe-Wade Funeral Home, 70 Washington Street, Taunton on Sunday from 4:00-7:00PM.
