William J. Ochab, 98, of New Bedford died Monday, May 28, 2018 at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness. Known to his family and friends as “Bill,” he was the loving husband of the late Beverly H. (Boman) Ochab, to whom he was married for almost 65 years.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Jan and Mary (Salamon) Ochab, he lived in New Bedford for almost all of his life. During World War II, he served in the United States Navy.
Mr. Ochab was employed as an electrical engineer in the Submarine Fire Control Division at the Naval Underwater System Center in Newport, RI, until his retirement in 1980. Following his retirement, he worked for McLaughlin Research Corporation in Middletown, RI for five years.
Mr. Ochab was a graduate of New Bedford High School and the University of Rhode Island. For more than thirty years, he was a member of the Reservation Golf Course. He also was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in New Bedford.
He is survived by four children, Shelley Ochab and her husband Chester Gougis of Illinois, Sharon Hudon and her husband Michael of Acushnet, Sheryl Calder and her husband Cail of Iowa, and Jan Ochab of Virginia; two grandchildren, Heidi Conti and her husband Michael of Virginia and Ryan Hudon and his girlfriend Jaclyn DiMauro of New York; two great grandchildren, Owen and Emily Conti; and many nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Joseph Ochab, Anna Martin, and Josephine Sargent.
His Funeral will be held on Saturday June 2, 2018 at 9 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at St. Mary's Church, Tarkiln Hill Rd. at 10 AM. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Friday June 1, 2018 from 4-7 PM.
