Irma Abbott Young, 88, of Irwin County, Georgia, died Saturday, May 26, 2018, at Cypress Pond in Tifton.

Funeral services will be held 11 AM, Wednesday, May 30, 2018, at Ocilla United Methodist Church in Ocilla with the Rev. Jay Roberson officiating. Interment will follow in Old Valley Grove Cemetery in Irwin County. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the sanctuary.

Mrs. Young was born September 7, 1929, in Mauk, Georgia, to the late Rev. Cecil Ashby & Lucy Jane Montgomery Abbott. She was a graduate of Andrew College, majoring in education and minoring in music. She loved playing the piano as well as gardening. She loved to sew and made many of the dresses worn by her daughters. She especially loved her cat, “Kitten”. She and her husband were well respected farmers in Irwin County for over 50 years. Mrs. Young was a faithful member of Ocilla United Methodist Church where she played the piano, sang in the choir, and served many years as choir director. It wasn’t Christmas until Miss Irma sang “O Holy Night”. Mrs. Young will be remembered as a good and faithful servant, one who allowed her faith to guide her each day.

She is survived by her two daughters and their husbands: Mary Ann Peacock & Dermot of Mars Hill, North Carolina and Irma Jane Richardson & Gerald of Chula; her grandchildren and their spouses: Jamie Richardson & Brooke, Kris Richardson & Christy, and Scott Richardson & Nichole; her great-grandchildren: Wesley Richardson, Cam Richardson, Max Richardson, and Kaydance Richardson; a sister, Helen Jones & Bob of Kennesaw; sister-in-law, Mauldine Young; and several nieces and nephews including a niece, Amy Ramsey. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Wesley Young; a brother, David Abbott; a sister and brother-in-law, Margaret Ramsey & James Ramsey; and Mrs. Young’s twin sister, Verna Abbott.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to Sherron Rush of Georgia Living at Home for the loving, attentive, and passionate care she showed to Mrs. Young. She definitely went above and beyond and lovingly called Mrs. Young her baby. The family also appreciates the staff of Cypress Pond for all their care as well.
