James Howard Flatt, 96, of Anderson died April 17, 2018 at St. Vincent Anderson after a long illness.
He was born February 19, 1922, in Overton County, TN. The family moved to Indiana in 1931.
He graduated from Anderson High School Class of 1941, and started to work at Delco Remy the next day as an apprentice. He married fellow Tennessean, Mazelle Phillips on May 29, 1942. She passed away on August 28, 2009 after 67 years of marriage.
He completed his apprenticeship March 2, 1944 and entered the Navy on May 19, 1944. Honorably discharged as a Machinist Mate 2nd Class, March of 1946, after crossing the Pacific eight times and making three invasions, two in the Philippines and one in Okinawa, Japan.
James returned to work in the Delco Remy Model Shop until March of 1950 when he was transferred to Product Engineering. During the next many years, he was a member of Society of Automotive Engineers and a member of the Anderson Noon Lions Club.
He was sole owner or co-owner of 12 patents. He retired from General Motors March 1, 1980 as a Senior Project Engineer.
He was preceded in death by parents, George (Martha) Flatt, siblings, Foy (Oscar) Masters, Elmo (Geneva, Donna) Flatt, Leo (Vallie) Flatt and Beatrice (Luther P.) Harris and several nieces and nephews.
James is survived by Gerald Flatt of Phoenix, Lucille Carwile, Cookeville, TN; Wanda (Warren) Mitchell, Alexandria, Mark Harris and James (Wanda) Stringer of Alexandria.
Services will be on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at 10 a.m. at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service with Pastor Steve Huddleston officiating. Burial will take place in East Maplewood Cemetery.
