Obituary

Ellis, Howard F. 92, of Wellesley died on April 11 of an unexpected illness, surrounded by his family and care-givers at the Newton-Wellesley Hospital.

He was born December 20, 1925 in Hyannis, son of Howard Haskins Ellis and Lorraine Fonseca. He was predeceased by his brothers Harry and Donald Handy. He lived with his aunt and uncle, John and Lena Romiza, from age 10 until his World War II Army induction in the middle of his senior year at Falmouth’s Lawrence High School. He served in Germany as a Sergeant in the 580th Field Artillery Battalion. Returning to Falmouth after the war he married Dorothy Day of Wellesley and North Falmouth.

Howard is survived by his wife, his sons Stephen (Steven) of Philadelphia, Mark (Jan) of New Orleans, and granddaughter Katherine of New York City. He worked as a salesman for Norcross Greeting Cards, then from 1957 to 1989 for the 3M Company, retiring in Wellesley. His career took the family to Detroit and Grand Rapids, MI, Toledo and Perrysburg, OH, then New Orleans, LA, returning to Massachusetts in 1978.

Howard loved golfing at Nehoiden and playing tennis with friends in Duxbury. He was a volunteer at the Audubon Broadmoor Sanctuary. In retirement Howard became a fine cook. He enjoyed early morning walks on the beach at Chapoquoit with his family, classes at WWLL, library book discussions, and the Wellesley Men’s Club meetings. A private family memorial gathering will be held this summer.
