Obituary

George V. Cafferty, 77, of New Bedford, died Wednesday March 21, 2018 at home surrounded by his family after a brief and courageous battle with cancer.  He was the devoted husband of Ann M. (Healy) Cafferty. George and Ann were high school sweethearts and would have been married for 53 years in May.
 
Born in New Bedford, he was the son of the late George H. and Gladys (Murray) Cafferty.  He lived in New Bedford his entire life.
 
He was a 1961 graduate of New Bedford Vocational High School, studying automotive. After high school, he served in the Army Reserves. George worked at Com Gas for 35 years before retiring in 1997.  While at Com Gas, he was the Blood Bank Secretary for many years. George was a consistent blood donor amassing 14 gallons throughout the years, ultimately being recognized by the Southcoast Blood Bank. He enjoyed spending time with family, playing cards, golfing, and volunteering at Holy Family-Holy Name School for many years.
 
He is survived by his wife Ann; his sons, Shawn Cafferty of New Bedford and Peter Cafferty and his wife Amie of Tewksbury; his loving grandchildren Devin Rutter of Danvers, Julia Cafferty and Liam Cafferty both of Tewksbury; his sisters-in-law, Mary Ducharme, Dorothy Tweedie, and Kathleen Greely and her husband, Wallace, all of New Bedford, Martha Monti and her husband, Anthony of Holbrook, and Marsha Rego of Hanson; his brother-in-law Thomas F. Healy IV and his wife, Susan of Wareham; 13 nieces and nephews; and many great-nieces and great-nephews. He was the brother-in-law of the late Dennis Tweedie and Arthur Ducharme.
 
Visiting hours will be on Sunday March 25, 2018 from 3-7 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park Street, New Bedford.  His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday March 26, 2018 at 11 AM in St. Bernard’s Church, 30 South Main Street, Assonet.  Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery, Fairhaven. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests donations be made in George's memory to Holy Family-Holy Name School, 91 Summer Street, New Bedford, MA 02740.
