Obituary

Mr. George William Bentley, known to his friends as “Mousie”, of North Chelmsford, MA, passed away in his home on March 18, 2018.

He was born on October 27, 1945, the son of Charles Bentley and Ona (Andersen) Bentley of Gloucester, MA. He proudly served as a Private First Class in F Battery, 16th Armored Field Artillery Regiment of the United States Army in Vietnam from 1968 – 1969 and was part of the 101st Airborne Division.

George received his bachelor’s degree at Lowell Tech, and also attended Middlesex Community College; he also attended Northeastern before being drafted. He worked as a tax support agent for the IRS. He was also a real estate agent on the side, lastly at Schruender Real Estate in Andover.

George enjoyed fishing and drinking Miller High Life with his son, “speaking the truth”, and trying as many breakfast joints with his daughter as possible. He made his sarcastic sense of humor and realistic point of view known to all. He loved movies and television series, especially those about history. He constantly had “oldies” music cranked up wherever he went. George also loved keeping a close eye on Groupon and Phantom Gourmet so he could take his family out to try new places.

He was a proud member of the Masons for the past 45 years and had achieved the status of Master Mason at the Saint Matthew’s Lodge A.F. & A.M. of Andover, MA. He had also been a long member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in North Andover.

George resided in Chelmsford, MA, but his heart always belonged to his beloved roots deep in the heart of the Ballardvale section of Andover, MA.  George was a townie's townie and was also described fondly as "The Mayor" of Ballardvale.

George is survived by his son Geoffrey William Bentley and wife Laura of Nashua, NH, daughter; Jacquelyn Marie Bentley of Brighton, MA, and his former wife Janet Baronian Bentley of Pelham, NH.

He is also survived by his sister, Charlotte O. (Tyning) Panneton and brother-in-law Ernest J. Panneton of Salem, NH; his niece Melissa J. Marriott and her husband Robert E. Marriott, Jr., his niece Rebecca L. Tyning and her partner Daryl K. Findlay, and his grand-nephew Robert E. Marriott, III.

He was predeceased by his father, Charles T. Bentley and mother Ona V. Bentley, both of Andover, MA and his grand-niece Elizabeth J. Marriott.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in George's name to the Wounded Warrior Project, www.woundedwarriorproject.org, the Vietnam Veterans of America, www.vva.org, or to the National League of POW/MIA Families, www.pow-miafamilies.org.
