Obituary

Laconia-John B Hoffman, 94, 21 Ledges Drive, Taylor Community died peacefully on Sunday March 18, 2018.

John was born February 9, 1924 in Boston Massachusetts, the son of Robert S. Hoffman and May Fiske Hoffman. He attended Weymouth Public Schools and Dartmouth College. He left Dartmouth to enter the U.S. Army Air Corps where he served as a 1st Lieutenant from 1942-1946. He was a longtime resident of Weymouth and Hingham Massachusetts before moving to the Lakes Region in 1979. He was self-employed owning laundry and dry cleaning businesses in both Massachusetts and New Hampshire until he retired in 1993. He loved playing saxophone and clarinet with a passion for the big band jazz era. With his passion for big band music he founded and directed of the Weymouth Rotary Youth Jazz Band, and the band played for several Rotary functions. He continued his jazz playing in New Hampshire with group known as the “Golden Oldies” well into his 80’s. He loved farming and gardening and enjoyed telling stories about spending time on the family’s farm in Peterborough New Hampshire with his beloved dog Joe Beef.

Survivors include a son, E. Harl Hoffman and his wife Beth-Ann Willey of East Barre Vermont, two daughters, Doris E. Wood and her husband Robert Wood of Eatonton, Georgia, and Virginia A. Barunas of Gilford New Hampshire; seven grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren;10 nieces and 7nephews. In addition to his parents John was predeceased by his wife Polly of 68 years, brothers Robert S. Hoffman Jr, Theodore Hoffman, Henry Hoffman, and a sister Mary Connard.

There will be no calling hours.

A private burial will be held at a later date in the family lot in North Weymouth Cemetery, North Weymouth, Massachusetts.
