Obituary

Francis J. “Frank” Boyle, age 95, longtime resident of Woburn, passed away on March 16, 2018. Born in Cambridge, Frank was the son of the late George H. and Eleanor (Sullivan) Boyle.

Mr. Boyle was raised in Somerville and was a graduate of Somerville High School, where he was a basketball standout. After high school, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, where he was a deep sea diver. Upon discharge from the Navy, Frank attended Stanley College, where he earned a B.S. in Oratory, as he was a great public speaker.

Frank married the love of his life, Stella, on January 4, 1948. Together they successfully owned and operated Stella’s Beauty Salon in Cambridge (across from St. John’s Church) for over 25 years. Mr. Boyle was employed as a Racing Steward and Parking Supervisor at Suffolk Downs for many years and was the Union Vice President of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (I.B.E.W.) Local 123.

In his younger years, Frank enjoyed playing hockey, ice skating and skiing with his family. He loved being around the ocean and the salty air in Scituate, Revere Beach, and Hampton, NH, and was always sporting a great tan.

Frank loved the outdoors and all animals, specifically his Palomino horse “Snowfire”, and liked to go to horse shows.
As he got older, Frank loved meeting up with the guys and hanging out for coffee at the Four Corners McDonald’s in Woburn. His daughter Loris remembered his kind manner and how he was so generous and giving. She said with a smile, “Generous was his middle name!” She specifically recalled a time when he paid for a woman’s expensive prescription at the pharmacy when she did not have the money.

Frank was pre-deceased by two wives: Stella Boyle, to whom he was married for over 60 years until her passing, and Mary F. Nolan. He was the loving father of Loris Burbine and her husband David of the NH Seacoast, and the late Stan Boyle, and the devoted grandfather of Brittany Helen Boyle-Burbine, Jackie-Jean, and the late Christa Mary Stella Burbine. He was also the dear brother of the late George H. Boyle and Lucille V. Libitz, and is further survived by several nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to gather at Costello Funeral Home, 177 Washington St. Winchester, on Friday, March 23 from 2-4 and 7-9PM, and again on Saturday, March 24 at 9AM followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Barbara’s Church, 138 Cambridge Rd., Woburn, MA 01801, at 10AM. Burial will follow in Cambridge Cemetery.
