Obituary



Borges, Fr Laurence J, of Boston, age 87, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at Regina Cleri Residences surrounded by the comfort of his loving family and friends.

He was the son of the late Alfred J and Johanna A Borges, brother of the late Alfred J Borges Jr of Brockton and the late Marie A. Quinn of Marion, and survived by Jack Quinn of Marion and Betty Borges of Brockton and the uncle to many nieces and nephews and their families. He was also a mentor to many individuals, especially Manuel, Bobby and Willie.

He was ordained from St John’s Seminary in Brighton on February 2, 1959 and served in the following parishes: St Albert the Great Parish, Weymouth, St Mary of the Annunciation, Cambridge, St Rose, Chelsea, St Patrick, Roxbury, Blessed Sacrament, Jamaica Plain, the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, Boston, St Stephens, Framingham and San Francisco de Asis, Chimbote, Peru where he was a member of the Society of St James, The Apostle. He was the Director of the Hispanic Apostolate of the Archdiocese of Boston.

Fr Borges served as chairperson of the Mayor’s Committee on Medical Evaluation and Development in Chelsea – the group that attracted MGH to establish the MGH-Chelsea Health Center. He also served for 20 years as Member of the Corporation of the MGH.

His first assignment as a newly ordained priest was in St Albert the Great Parish, where he remained until June of 1964. He returned to St Albert’s two times – once as pastor in June 1994 and again as pastor at the request of Archbishop Sean OMalley in June of 2005, when the parish was re-opened after being closed for ten months.

Relative and friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Tuesday, March 20, 2018 from 2-4 pm at Regina Cleri Residences, 60 Wm Cardinal O’Connell Way, Boston, MA. Additional visiting hours are on Wednesday, March 21, 2018 from 9-11 am at St Albert the Great Parish, 1130 Washington St, Weymouth, MA. Immediately following, the funeral mass will be celebrated by Cardinal Sean OMalley at 11 am.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Fr Borges’s memory to Regina Cleri Residences, 60 Wm Cardinal O’Connell Way, Boston, MA for the retired priests.
