Obituary

Margaret Marie Hanabury (Ellard), age 87. Wife, mother, grandmother, educator, and business associate passed away at home in Weymouth on Tuesday, March 6, 2018. Marie enjoyed a long and happy marriage with her husband Richard (“Dick”) for sixty-two years. Marie is survived by Dick; her son Ethan and his partner Joseph Vallo of Manhattan, NY and Fort Lauderdale, FL.; her son Mark and his wife Josephine of Hingham, MA and her two granddaughters, Ann Marie of Manhattan, NY and Jane of Hingham, MA; and many nieces and nephews.

Born on August 21, 1930 in Weymouth and named for Princess Margaret who was born on the same day, Marie was the daughter of the deceased Margaret (Hanley) and Harold Ellard. She graduated from Weymouth High School and Boston University, where she studied education. She was set up on a double date with Dick by her deceased sister Elizabeth (Liz) in 1950. Marie and Dick married in 1955 and lived happily together for the remainder of Marie’s life.

Marie’s first career was as an elementary school teacher in Marshfield, MA and Hewlett, NY. Marie’s second and favorite career was as a loving and devoted mother and grandmother. Marie’s third career was as a business partner with Dick and her son Mark. She was the friendly and knowledgeable voice to anyone who called Hanabury & Sons, an asphalt paving company she and Dick started.

Marie was known for her quick sense of humor, genuine interest in others, brilliant and inquisitive mind (she read three newspapers a day), delicious home-cooked meals, and loving gatherings of family and friends.

In her last few months of life, Marie was made as comfortable as possible in the home that she and Dick built and lived in for sixty years of their marriage. Dick was sleeping beside her when she passed. Marie received loving and professional care from the wonderful personnel of Norwell Visiting Nurses Association. She was comforted by the thoughts and prayers of her loving family and friends.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to the memorial visitation for Marie on Friday, March 9, 2018 from 4-7pm in the C. C. Shepherd Funeral Home located at 134 Pleasant St. (Columbian Sq.) S. Weymouth, MA. A Memorial Service in honor of Marie’s life will take place on Saturday March 10 at 11:30am in the Union Congregational Church located at 74 Commercial St. Braintree, MA.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Norwell Visiting Nurses Association and Hospice at nvna.org.
