Howard R. Fiske, Jr. 82

Howard R. Fiske, Jr., age 82, a lifelong resident of Mansfield, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at Wingate at Norton. He was the beloved husband of Margaret J. (Fuller) Fiske, to whom he was wed on January 31, 1959.

Born in Mansfield, MA on November 13, 1935, he was a loving son of the late Howard R. “Dick”, Sr. and Jesse B. (Brooks) Fiske.

Howard grew up in Mansfield, was a 1953 graduate of Mansfield High School and proudly served his country from 1958-1960 as a member of the United States Army.

A familiar face in the community, Howie was truly one of a kind. For nearly forty years he was employed in various capacities at the former Shepard’s Flowers in Mansfield. He also served the Town of Mansfield as a permanent and call firefighter for over forty years. Following retirement, he had worked part time at Michaels in Mansfield.

Mr. Fiske served as a former member of the Mansfield Airport Commission and the Mansfield Band Parents Association, volunteering his assistance and chaperoning numerous band trips. He also volunteered many hours with the West Tisbury Fire Department on Martha’s Vineyard.

Howie’s family was the focal point of his life. He took great pride in caring for his wife and was so proud of his children and grandchildren’s accomplishments. He was always there to lend others a helping hand and was quick to strike up a conversation with anyone he met. Through his affiliation with the airport, he mentored many young men pursuing their dreams of becoming an Eagle Scout.

His hobbies included ballooning, knitting and woodworking. He and his wife Margaret enjoyed many wonderful cruises and spending quiet time together at the Cape Cod Canal.

In addition to his beloved wife of fifty-nine years, he is survived by his devoted children Richard H. Fiske (Retired Capt. MFD) and his wife Andrea of Mansfield, Susan J. Guthrie and her husband Steven of Mansfield, Sandra J. Smith and her husband Wayne of Mansfield, and Ronald W. Fiske and his wife Kim of Attleboro. He was the dear brother of Thomas A. Fiske and his wife Barbara of Mansfield. He is also survived by his adoring grandchildren Daniel, Emilee, Katelyn, Andrew and Kyle, as well as his loving nieces and nephews.

His funeral service, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Friday, March 9th at 11:00 A.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main St., Mansfield. Burial will follow at the Spring Brook Cemetery in Mansfield.
