Obituary

Joe Small, of Medford, died peacefully at home on Wednesday, February 21st, surrounded by the love of his family. He was 89. Joe was born December 19th, 1928 in Charlestown, and raised in Medford. He was the son of the late Luke and Delia (Boyle) Small.

Joe was a longtime member of the City of Medford Fire Department and served on Engine 1 at headquarters. Joe was appointed in 1964 and was an active member of the Fire Fighters Club and Union. Joe was a tireless advocate, and leading figure working at state level, for protection and safety of Fire Fighters, advocating for state legislation. Joe was successful in bringing awareness to the public about the high cancer rates in Fire Fighters. He was the past Vice President of Emeritus International Association of Professional Fire Fighters.

Joe was a dedicated family man. He was a loving husband, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He will be remembered for the love he shared with his family and friends.

Joe was the beloved husband of Peggy for 67 years. He was the loving father of John Small and his wife Jill, Robert Small and his wife Linda all of Medford and Carol Ann Small and her husband Brian Mulcahy of Melrose. He was the loving grandfather Kristi Conroy of Winchester, Amanda Nestor of Andover, Robert Small Jr., Casey Small all of Medford and Shannon Small of Falmouth. He was the great-grandfather to Dylan Nestor of Andover.

His funeral will be from the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main Street, Medford on Tuesday, February 27th at 9 AM followed by a funeral mass celebrated in Immaculate Conception Church, 600 Pleasant Street, Malden, at 10 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Monday 4 - 8 PM. Services will conclude with burial at Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.
