WEBSTER - Doris A. (Martel) Canty, of Webster, MA passed away peacefully on Monday February 12, 2018 at the age of 99. Doris was born in Webster, Massachusetts, the daughter of Edgar and Mary (Kasierski) Martel.
Doris is predeceased by her high school sweetheart and beloved husband of 63 years, Vincent J. Canty Sr. She will be greatly missed by her children, Sheila Moossa of North Andover, John J. Canty and his wife Ann Marie of Webster, Sharon Hylka and her husband Francis of Dudley and by her daughter-in-law, Linda Canty of North Carolina. Doris was blessed with eight grandchildren, including Mary Moossa Jurek, John Moossa and his wife Daisy, Steven Canty and his wife Lisa, Jeffrey Canty, Kathy Carroll and her husband Thomas, Jason Canty, Jonathan Hylka and his wife Kathleen, Erin Hylka Polansky and her husband Kevin. Later in life she especially treasured her 9 great-grandchildren, including Mary Kate Jurek, Anna (Jurek) Maclellan, Emily Jurek, Dolan Harrington, Alexander Moossa, Patrick Hylka, Jonathan Hylka, Jack Polansky, and Eloise Polansky. She is predeceased by her son Vincent J. Canty Jr., her two brothers, Edgar and Robert Martel, and her loving son-in-law Walter Moossa. Doris will also be missed by her vast extended Canty and Martel families including many nephews, nieces, and friends.
Doris resided in Webster her whole life, graduating in 1936 from St. Louis High School, where she met Vincent, the love of her life. Together Doris and Vincent raised a family and enjoyed the company of the large, Irish Canty family, of which she was an extremely proud member. When Vincent enlisted in the Navy during World War II, Doris not only cared for her three children at the time but also attended cosmetology school as a way of providing income for the family by owning and operating a small beauty parlor for over 45 years with a steady group of loyal clients. Doris loved to cook and especially bake. She will forever be remembered for her wonderful holiday dinners, and especially her extraordinary apple pies. Undoubtedly most proud of her family, she loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren immensely. She was a true Matriarch providing unconditional love, advice, compassion, and understanding to all.
Doris was a lifelong member of St. Louis Parish and the St. Louis League of Catholic Women. She was a devout Catholic who always had her rosary beads within reach. She was an avid reader, a continuous learner and, of course, a diehard Red Sox fan.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the members of Notre Dame Health Care Hospice: Susan Keefe, Mishka Long, Tatiana King, Colleen Amyot, and Marybeth Robinson, as well as Linda Pelligrini Geriatric NP for all the support and kindness provided to Doris and her family during an extremely difficult time.
The funeral will be held Monday, February 19, from Scanlon Funeral Service, 38 East Main St., with a Mass at 10:00 AM in Saint Louis Church, 14 Lake Street. Burial is private. A calling period will be held on Monday, February 19, from 8:15 to 9:15 AM in the funeral home.
