Obituary

Edward Nicholas Calo, of Wakefield, formerly of Medford, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, February 1st. He was 84.

Born in Medford, he was the son of the late Joseph J. and Margaret G. (Bonito) Calo. After high school, Edward enlisted in the United State Army and proudly served his country during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on October 6, 1956.

Edward worked for Raytheon as a Machinist. He was a gifted mechanic and had a way with being able to take things apart and put them back together again. From cars to appliances, there wasn’t anything Edward couldn’t repair. His family often thinks back to earlier years picturing Edward always underneath a car, hard at work. He was a generous man, soft spoken and kind hearted.

In his spare time, Edward enjoyed playing golf at the Mount Hood Golf Club. He also liked playing cards and going to the track for the horse races. He and his wife, Shirley, enjoyed traveling together over the years. Though they visited many places, his favorite was Las Vegas. Edward was an avid sports fan, and his favorites were football and hockey.

Edward enjoyed his daily coffee at the Dunkin’ Donuts in Haines Square, Medford. He loved the staff there and the friendships he made over the years with them. Like his personality, his coffee was always light and sweet. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Edward was the beloved husband of Shirley (Decker) Calo. They married on March 25, 1960 at Sacred Hearts Church in Malden. Together the two shared 57 years of loving marriage. He was the devoted father of Linda Calo, James Calo and his wife Diana of New Jersey, Diane Cullen and her husband Jim of Carmel, California, Nancy Sullivan and her husband Gerard of Burlington, Eddie Calo and his wife Elisa of Reading, and the late Sandra Calo, who passed away in 1992. Edward was the loving grandfather of Lara Tacito, Nicholas Calo, Emma Hall, Danny Sullivan, Cassandra Calo, Bryan Sullivan, Victoria Calo, Julia Calo, Sophia Calo, Joseph Calo, Elliana Calo and Julian Calo. He was the dear brother of the late Dolores Serino and was a cherished uncle of Janet Boccelli, Stephen Serino, Eddie Serino, Joey Serino, Debbie Galvin, Chereyl Decker-Vick, Donald Decker, Scott Decker, Laura Surrette, and Gail Decker.

His funeral will be from the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main Street, Medford, on Wednesday, February 7th at 9 AM followed by a Funeral Mass celebrated in St. Francis of Assisi Church, 441 Fellsway West, Medford, at 10 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday from 4 through 8 PM. Services will conclude with interment and military honors at Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent in Sandra Calo’s memory to the Garden of Peace, P.O. Box 8382 Boston, MA 02114.
