Obituary

Bernadette A. Merchant (Ruane) of Canton passed away peacefully in her 100th year January 29th surrounded by her loving family. Born and raised in Canton, she graduated from St. John’s High School was a lifelong resident of the town. She worked for many years for the Canton Public Schools as a School Aid and Cafeteria Worker. She also worked as an Ombudsman for HESCO Elder Services and as a Clerk for Plymouth Rubber and Ferrara Brothers in Canton. She was an active parishioner at St. John the Evangelist Church in Canton where she was a member of the Altar Guild and a Eucharistic Minister. She was also a member of the Legion of Mary, Daughters of Isabella, The Canton Catholic Women’s Club, the Community Club of Canton and the New Silver Beach Assn in Falmouth.
Beloved wife of the late Leonard G. Mother of Dr. L. Paul Merchant and his wife Madeline of Scituate, Michael D. Merchant and his wife Lua of Tustin, CA , John E. Merchant and his wife Mary of Falmouth, Rosemary Driscoll and her husband Robert of Warfordsburg, PA, and Ann Marie Giampietro -O’Donnell and her husband Thomas O’Donnell, Jr. of Falmouth. Beloved daughter of the late Bernard J. and Delia J. (Dolan) Ruane. Sister of the late Lillian Flynn, Julia Beck, Mary Venckus, Joseph, John and Francis Ruane. Also survived by 15 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. Visiting hours at the Dockray & Thomas Funeral Home 455 Washington St. Canton Thursday 3-7 pm. Funeral Mass at St. John the Evangelist Church Canton Friday morning at 10:30. Burial St. Mary’s Cemetery, Canton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Canton Senior Center Pleasant St. Canton, MA 02021 or to the St. John School Foundation Box 604 Canton, MA 02021.
