The Mello family sadly announces the passing of their matriarch Mary Lillian (Shea) Mello, 88, of New Bedford. Lillian, as she was affectionately known, died January 10, 2018 at the New Bedford Jewish Convalescent Home. She was happily married to Edward G. Mello, Jr. for 66 years
Born in Brooklyn, NY, the daughter of the late John J. and Mary M. (Adams) Shea, she lived in New Bedford most of her life and was a communicant of St. Julie Billiart Church.
Mrs. Mello was formerly employed by as a teachers aide for the New Bedford Public Schools and worked at both Hayden- McFadden and E.C.Brooks schools.
She was a member of the Westport Yacht Club where she could be found with her family and many friends. She was also an avid reader and almost always had a book close-by.
Survivors include her husband Edward Jr.; a daughter, Joan Mello Corda and her husband Larry of Wellesley; 3 sons, Edward G. Mello III and his wife Jeanette of Navato, CA, Peter J. Mello and his wife Pattie of Dartmouth and Christopher J. Mello and his wife Becky of Raynham; 12 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was the sister of the late Gertrude "Trudy" Cook.
Her visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, February 6th from 4-7 PM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home For Funerals, 495 Park St. New Bedford. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 309 Waverley Oaks Rd., Waltham, MA 02452 or www.alz.org.
