Obituary

CORNISH - Howard Lincoln Carr Jr., “Linc”, 96, of Cornish, departed from this world on January 14, 2018 surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Pejepscot, ME on February 26, 1921 the third child of the five children of Howard Lincoln Sr. and Hazel (Noyes) Carr. He lived in Topsham, ME most of his early life and was in the armed services until 1945. He met Edna Louise Estabrook at a USO dance in 1943, they married soon after and together raised six children. During their married life they lived in many different places, finally settling in Cornish, Maine in 1960. Howard, (or Linc), worked at various jobs until they started the paper, “Your Weekly Shopping Guide” in 1959. At that time, Edna had five children plus a two month old baby, and still managed to do the, then 4 page, paper with just a typewriter and her hand lettering. This chronicle proved to be very popular in the area and grew to a substantial size until their retirement in 1983. It is still run by family today. Also during this time, Linc raised, trained and raced horses. Not satisfied with retirement, Linc and Edna bought and remodeled two apartment houses, and began the present “Cornish Trading Co.” They also dismantled (with their youngest son, Jon’s assistance) an 1800’s cape style house in Harpswell, and rebuilt it on an ocean-front lot there. Linc and Edna moved to their former home, “Maple Hill Farm” in 1968 after constructing a new house on the site. They raised sheep until they discovered Alpacas in 2004, and in their eighties opened, and ran a small farm store and antique shop. He took great joy in being with family, and a part of the many gatherings on holidays, birthdays, weddings, etc. He also loved, and was very proud of, the farm and their animals. He is survived by his wife, Edna; eldest son, Howard L. III (and Kathleen) and family; four daughters, Linda (and Jim) Hanscom and family, Susan (and Linc) Gilman and family, Elizabeth (and Jack) Wadsworth and family, and Barbara (and Frank) Bathe and family; youngest son, Jonathan, his former wife, Amber and family; seventeen grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; and four great great grandchildren. Relatives and friends are invited to share with his family in a “Farewell Gathering” at 2:00, on Saturday, January 20, at the Cornish UCC in Cornish. Interment will be at Riverview Cemetery in Topsham, Maine in the spring. There will be a Celebration of Life this summer.
