Obituary

CHICOPEE – Frederick G. “Fred” Bell, 84, of the Aldenville section of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Sunday, January 7, 2018. He passed into Eternal Life at his home surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in Fall River, Massachusetts on March 19, 1933, a beloved son of the late Frederick A. and Rose (Sirois) Bell. Fred enlisted in the United States Air Force at the age of 18 and served his country during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He retired on June 30, 1972 at Westover Air Force Base in Chicopee after over 20 years of service with the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. In 1973, following his military service, he was employed as a mail carrier for the United States Post Office in Holyoke. Fred was a Past President of the Postal Union and the Postal Credit Union where he also served as a member of their Board of Directors. Fred was an active member of the Fairview Council 4044 Knights of Columbus in Chicopee where he volunteered at their weekly Bingo, monthly Spaghetti Suppers and yearly Tootsie Roll Drives and also served on their Wake Committee. He also was a former driver for the Chicopee Senior Center. Active in his Catholic faith, he was a longtime communicant of Sainte Rose de Lima Church in Chicopee where he served his parish as an usher and greeter. Fred was a quiet man who enjoyed the simple things in life. But most of all, he was a hard working man who loved his family and his many friends. He leaves his beloved wife and best friend, Vivian G. (Martel) Bell. They were married on July 1, 1952 at Saint Christopher Church in Houston, Texas and were blessed with over 65 years of happiness together. In addition to his beloved wife, he also leaves his two loving children, Michael P. Bell and his wife, Connie, of Amherst, VA and Debra A. Relihan of Chicopee; his four cherished grandchildren, Jacob R. Bell, Thomas Relihan and his fiancée, Jennifer Schaler, Kevin Relihan and his wife, Erika, and Kelsey Relihan; his two cherished great-granddaughters, Rosalie and Amelia Relihan; his former son-in-law, Daniel Relihan of East Longmeadow; his four dear sisters, Helen Desmarais and her husband, Robert, of South Yarmouth, Nancy Branco and Carol Gariepy, both of Fall River, and Joan Bell of Quincy; and his dear friends, Jack and Audrey Jones of Chicopee. Fred also leaves his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, numerous friends and extended members of the Bell and Martel families. In addition to his beloved parents, he was also predeceased by his loving brother, James Bell. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, January 12, 2018 at 12 noon at Sainte Rose de Lima Church, 600 Grattan Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His Committal Service with United States Air Force Military Honors will follow the Mass at 2 p.m. in the Chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001.
