Obituary

Donald M. “Smitty” Smith 83, of Franklin, died peacefully, with family at his side, Saturday December 30, 2017, at Milford Regional Medical Center, following an illness. He was the beloved husband of Elizabeth A. “Betsy” (Keegan) Smith, with whom he shared 56 years of marriage.

Born in Quincy, Ma on April 11, 1934, a son of the late Margaret Smith, he was a resident of Franklin for over 45 years, and was a former resident of Dorchester.

He was raised in Dorchester, was a graduate of Hyde Park High School Class of 1952 and until his retirement in 1986, he worked as a telephone repairman for AT&T.

A proud American, he joined the United States Navy during the Korean War, he served with the 3rd Marine Division and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal. He attained the rank of hospital corpsman and was honorably discharged in April 1955.

“Smitty” enjoyed spending time with his family, all sports, especially baseball and football, walking and traveling. He was also a Past Commander of the Medway VFW Post 1526, and was an longtime usher at St. Mary’s Church, Franklin, where he served as head usher for the former nine o’clock children’s Mass.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Lisa J. Smith of Gloucester, Dan M. Smith of Blackstone and Paul Smith and his wife Laura of Wrentham. Also surviving are his cherished grandchildren, Matt, Jeremy and April Smith.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral Saturday January 6th, with visitation beginning at 9:30AM at the Charles F. Oteri and Son Franklin Funeral Home 33 Cottage St. followed by a funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church, 1 Church Square, Franklin at 11AM.

Interment with military honors will be held Monday at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.

Due to floral limitations at the cemetery, donations in his memory may be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association 480 Pleasant St. Watertown, MA 02472.
