Maria C. Bettencourt, 78

Dateline: Berkley, MA

Maria C. (Avila) Bettencourt, age 78, of Berkley, formerly of Taunton, passed away on Friday, December 29, 2017 at Brigham & Women’s Hospital. She was the former wife of the late Jose V. Bettencourt.

Born in Flores, Azores, Portugal on May 7, 1939, she was a daughter of the late Roberto and Maria do livaramento (Sousa) Avila.

Maria came to the United States in 1974, first settling in Stoughton. She moved to Taunton in 1976, and for the past four years had made her home in Berkley.

A dedicated homemaker to her adoring family, Mrs. Bettencourt was a communicant of The Annunciation of the Lord Church in Taunton.

Maria enjoyed crocheting, making rosaries, which were sent throughout the world, watching Portuguese soap operas, the Family Feud, but most of all, spending time which her cherished family.

She is survived by her devoted children Maria Connie Teixeira and her husband Gilbert of Taunton, Jose C. Bettencourt of Taunton, Maria Gorett Pothier and her husband Mark, Sr. of Berkley, Maria Celina Bettencourt of Taunton, and Emanuel J. Bettencourt and his fiancé Ellie Brown of Norton. She was the loving grandmother of Joshua and Alexandra Teixeira, Mark, Jr. and Nicholas Pothier, Keri Burch, Cymaiya and Kabrina McCarthy, and the great grandmother of Lucas Mendonca. She was the dear sister of the late Constance, Julia, Luisa and Labania.

Her funeral, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will begin on Saturday, January 6th at 9:00 A.M. from the Taunton Funeral Home, 8 Crapo St. (Off Route 140, Tremont) Taunton, followed by a Mass of Christian burial celebrated at 10:00 A.M. in the Annunciation of the Lord Church, 31 First St., Taunton. Burial will follow at Mayflower Hill Cemetery in Taunton.

Visiting hours will be held at the Taunton Funeral Home on Friday, January 5th from 5:00-8:00 P.M.

The family requests that those attending the services; please dress in blue attire in honor of Maria’s favorite color.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations in her memory to the Annunciation of the Lord Church.
